Comparing Cialis to Viagra, Levitra, and Non-Prescription Options

Cialis Versus Viagra, Levitra, and Others

Cialis was brought on the market after both Viagra and Levitra. However, Cialis, a product of Lilly/ICOS, has promised a benefit to the erectile dysfunction community that neither of the others can. If nothing else, it offers physicians and patients an alternate choice when the others might not work for them. Not only are these drugs a main line of defense for erectile dysfunction, but other medications are sure to be forthcoming. Perhaps the biggest benefit any of them offers is the mere fact that they exist in the mainstream and at the forefront of medical treatments.

Viagra (sildenafil citrate)

Viagra was launched by Pfizer into the marketplace in 1998 and the term “erectile dysfunction” became a regular media headline. It is the first in a new generation of drugs classified as selective phosphodiesterase Type 5 inhibitors, PDE5. PDE5 is an enzyme that disrupts the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, the chemicals needed to relax the muscle tissue of the penis allowing for blood flow. Pfizer found that sildenafil citrate stifled the PDE5 enzyme long enough to promote a healthy erection. Taken orally, the drug takes about 30 minutes to an hour to enter the system. However, it is not a miracle drug and does not promote spontaneous erections. Viagra does makes medication available in the system for a differing number of hours enabling an erection to take place, but it will not help with other factors, such as lack of desire or psychological impediments.

Levitra (vardenafil HCI)

Developed in cooperation between Bayer and GlaxoSmithKline, Levitra was put on the market following Food and Drug Administration approval in early 2003. Along with Cialis, it was close on the heels of Viagra. It also belongs to the class of erectile dysfunction drugs known as phosphodiesterase Type 5 inhibitors. However, the makers of Levitra promise a more efficient agent in vardenafil, the chemical that makes up their product. Vardenafil is purported to target the phosphodiesterase enzyme more completely than does the sildenafil in Viagra, even using less of it to achieve the same effect. That, hopefully, leads to fewer more mild side effects and perhaps a longer-lasting availability in the bloodstream.

Cialis (tadalafil)

Compared to Viagra and Levitra, Cialis had another angle in its fight against erectile dysfunction. Though tadalafil works similarly to both sidenafil and vardenafil, its benefit is its propensity to last up to 36 hours in the bloodstream. This, the product makers suggest, is the key enjoyment factor in this option. No longer does an erection or sexual activity have to be rushed.

Other Options

Sometimes patients have other health problems or are interested in trying something without the side effects and inherent risks in prescription medications. Other options to treat erectile dysfunction have included natural remedies, such as ginseng. Ginseng supplements have long been attributed to virility and vitality when it comes to sex. Gingko biloba is another herbal supplement that has had some promise in this field. Others seeking a more natural physical relief might explore the benefits of acupuncture or hypnosis.

Any time there is concern over a medical condition, the well-educated patient will seek a physician’s advice before using any drugs, prescription or otherwise.
